A friend left his job yesterday. Having a recognised disability and employed as somebody with a disability, his job profile was too demanding for him. So, after few days, with increasing exhaustion and problems to sleep due to stress and pressure to be quicker than he could be, he said goodbye to his employment.
We can try to make analogies between work and play, between activities that we enjoy and activities than we might enjoy or we might suffer. Activities that give us different types of benefits such as: skills, enjoyments, knowledge, meaning, friendships, value, money, structure to our daily life, motivation... however, when our health starts deteriorating it seems we have to leave that game or else we will loose it.
It is interesting to compare it with the person that is enjoying some kind of hobby. It can be anything, it can be an activity that is constructive or destructive. It can be an activity that in small dosage is beneficial, but in a high amount is harmful.
Thinking about what we enjoy, about the needs of the world, or at least the needs of our world and how to link an activity with a salary (employment or self-employment) is a very creative activity that can be very entertaining.
Think about socialising and networking. Some people are naturally more sociable than others, however everybody can develop skills that can be very beneficial not only for normal life social interaction but also for employment opportunities.
The same way that somebody can do some activity with enjoyment and have a financial gain, the same way that person can enjoy socialising and sharing his passion for doing something, helping other people with advise about the topic he/she enjoys doing.
It is useful to find hobbies that you enjoy and that you could find opportunities to develop as an employment or self-employment. Also it is useful to develop networking skills that can be useful to enjoy life and also to link them with the activities that you enjoy.
Imagine it is the weekend and you are thinking to do something to enjoy yourself, something that you can do to create a product that you can enjoy the process: it could be to cook something, to paint something, to write something, to build something, to design something... find something you enjoy doing, something that is easy for you, something you can spend a lot of time doing and that many people can be interested. And then you can ask yourself: Could there be an employment opportunity for this activity? Could there be a market and a business opportunity for me?
If there is a market, if there is a gap in the market where you can find yourself doing something unique.... maybe there is a business opportunity. Or maybe you could proactively trying to find employment related to it.
From another perspective, if you are not working, you could try to learn to improve your networking skills and your sociability trying to relate to people with similar interests and needs, people you can enjoy playing or working with, people who share similar interests or people you can help.
I have done a short video with a very brief example to use some creative thinking tools to think about employment. This example is in Spanish language, and in the future I will do something similar in English Language about Marketing.
